Which Filler is Right for You?

The aging process is unavoidable, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. Getting older affects us cosmetically as well as physically and emotionally, and our faces tend to be the biggest betrayer of our advancing age. Changes to the substances within the skin cause it to lose natural elasticity and suppleness, leading to a loss of volume in the cheeks and around the chin. This can cause sagging around the jawline, with lines, wrinkles, and folds developing across your face.

Fortunately, fillers can transform the way that you look and the way that you feel about your appearance, but how do you know which one is right for you? To help you make this important decision, let’s take a look at two of the most popular and effective fillers and how they work.

    Juvederm

All fillers have the main ingredient that helps to restore volume to the areas where it has been lost. The main ingredient in Juvederm is Hyaluronic Acid or HA for short.  Hyaluronic acid works by binding water to our skin, causing it to expand and plump which in turn causes lines and wrinkles to diminish as skin becomes smoother. Hyaluronic acid is naturally-occurring, meaning that there are no concerns about the body reacting badly to it.

    Juvederm is successful for:

    • Eliminating fine lines and wrinkles

    • Restoring facial volume

    • Reducing the appearance of facial scarrings, such as that seen in acne

    • Creating a younger and refreshed appearance

Like all fillers, Juvederm is injectable, and the solution will be injected into the areas of your face targeted for improvement. These locations will be decided at your consultation but are most common sections in the lower half of the face, including the cheeks, around the nose and mouth and along the jawline. There is no downtime needed after receiving Juvederm, and the treatment can be completed in a lunch break.

The results of Juvederm are only temporary, and patients can expect to need further treatment between 4 and 9 months after the initial series of injections.

    Restylane

Restylane is very similar to Juvederm in many ways. It too has Hyaluronic Acid as its main active ingredient, which enables it to hydrate the skin from within, plumping it out and stretching lines and wrinkles so that their appearance is completely diminished. HA also helps the skin to look hydrated, brighter and more youthful.

    Restylane is successful for:

    • Adding volume to the lower half of the face

    • Eliminating fine lines and wrinkles

    • Improving the appearance of facial scarring

    • Making skin look refreshed and rejuvenated

As with other fillers, Restylane is an injectable and is administered via a small, fine needle placed into the skin. A topical anesthetic can be provided if necessary, but since the needle is so small, many patients find that this isn’t required. Again, there is no downtime and patients can return to their usual activities immediately after their appointment.

The main difference between Juvederm and Restylane is the length of their effectiveness. Restylane typically lasts longer than other injectable fillers, and patients can realistically expect their results to be maintained for up to 12 months before further treatment is needed.

Both Juvederm and Restylane can turn back the clock on the aging process and help you to enjoy a youthful appearance for longer.
